This porcelain white and blue candy jar with lid features the maehwa, birds and bamboo design (greatly loved by early Joseon potters) on the lid and central body, as well as a design of wild chrysanthemums on the lower body. The harmony between the cobalt blue designs and the white background is quite remarkable. The design also shows a masterful use of the "single-brushing technique," a traditional art technique popular in the Tang Dynasty of China, in which an object is captured without using outlines. Blue and white porcelain wares of Korea are marked by an elegant form presenting a design of unrestrained brush strokes in perfect harmony with the negative space surrounding it. The beauty of elegance and spirituality emanating from the Korean blue and white porcelain is often compared with its Chinese counterpart, which is characterized by luxurious designs nearly comprising the entire surface.
