This unique paper lantern depicts the 16th century masterpiece paintings of Sinsaimdang (1504-1551), an icon of womanly and motherly virtues in Korea. She was the mother of Yi Yul-gok, the illustrious Confucian scholar from the Joseon dynasty and a consummate artist who excelled especially at chochungdo (painting of grass and insects). She was an attentive observer of each and every flower and grass growing in her garden, and insects such as butterflies, bees, mantises and grasshoppers visiting these blossoms. Her works meticulously reproduce their shapes and colors down to the minutest details and finest hues.

When the lamp is turned on, the four different paintings on each side harmonize perfectly with the orange background. The cover and base of the lamp is also made of hanji and is dyed with a natural pigment giving it a wooden color.

Produced after an arduous, time-consuming manufacturing process made only by hand, hanji, Korean mulberry paper, is an amazingly durable and versatile material for all kinds of arts and crafts. When used for a lampshade, hanji helps produce a beautiful, long-lasting lighting accessory for the home, radiating soft and comforting natural light to soothe the body and mind, tired from busy urban life.

Notice: This lamp is made to order. It takes a week or two to create it for you.
