Seated Amitabha Buddha

Also called Muryangsubul ('Buddha of Eternal Life') or Muryanggwangbul ('Buddha of Eternal Radiance'), Amitabha Buddha is the lord of the Pure Land of Bliss in the West where everyone relishes eternal youth. One of his teachings is that the devotional chanting of his name in this world helps a person enter the blissful land and achieve enlightenment after death. This teaching developed as a tradition of pursuing enlightenment by chanting in Mahayana Buddhism in the Far East.

In this work, the artist maximizes the natural beauty of the wood using the 'hemp cloth cutting' technique on Buddha's robe, with no coloring or gilding. The mercy of Buddha is beautifully captured in the gentle smile, a distinctive feature of Korean Buddhist images. Read More
