Celadon Porcelain Jug with Phoenix Lid and Lotus Leaf Design
Item number: 6848
This jug is a reproduction of a Goryeo Dynasty ((918-1392)) work housed in the National Museum of Korea. It is a jug characterized by a phoenix-decorated lid, a bamboo-stem-shaped handle, and a spout. The lid depicts a phoenix with its wings raised on a two-tiered lotus seat, and the lotus leaves are emphasized with white clay. The neck is decorated with vertical lines in black clay, and the lower part is decorated with a lotus leaf pattern in white clay. The body is painted with a lotus vine pattern in white clay to express it in large size, and the outline and details of the pattern are emphasized with engraving. The spout and handle feel taut as if they were actually made from broken bamboo. The glaze on the bottom was wiped off and the five places were supported with refractory clay to fire it. A similar metal jug from the Goryeo-era is housed in the Boston Museum of Art in the United States, which provides good data for considering the influence of Goryeo celadon and metalware. In addition, the metal jug housed in the Boston Museum of Art has a standing plate, so it is thought that this jug originally had a standing plate.
