Bamboo Jar White Porcelain with Iron Brown Plum Flower Painting
Item number: 3429
This white porcelain bamboo jar features reddish-brown bamboo and Maehwa (Korean plum blossom) painting in underglaze iron. The bamboo symbolizes loyalty as its leaves and stalks stay green throughout the seasons. One of the sagunja ("four noble beings") motifs loved by Korean artists, Maehwa has long been the herald of spring. Korean artists have been fascinated by Maehwa, which blooms at the end of winter, and thus have praised it as a symbol of the noble spirit overcoming all hardships.
Unlike the cobalt blue design, which is characterized by noble and elegant beauty, the design of the oxidized iron displays simple, abstract forms seized by energetic brush strokes. The design of underglaze iron against the pure white glaze creates the unique ambiance that gave Joseon (1392-1910) white porcelain ware a worldwide reputation.
