This celadon ceramic vase with lid exhibits the elegant body of a traditional prunus vase in which the voluminous shoulder is decorated with an inlaid bojagi ("wrapping cloth") design while the rest of the body is covered with fully bloomed peonies, clouds and lightning patterns carved in intaglio. The bojagi design was conceived from the tradition in which a valuable celadon work such as the one shown here often had a bojagi lavishly decorated with embroidery and tassels between the mouth and the lid to avoid a direct touch that could mar the surface. The fully open peony blossom is traditionally a symbol of wealth and nobility. This particular work is a reproduction of the 12th century masterpiece listed as Treasure No. 342. Read More
